Mocha Girl on a Mission: Kéla Walker Terri Lomax October 28, 2013 What obstacles did you have to overcome to get where you are today? My obstacles to get where I am have only been me- keeping my eye on the prize and staying focused and diligent to my goals. Really when you think about it, we are our own obstacles. Trials and tribulations come and go but it’s up to an individual to pull through. It’s so easy to get caught up in day to day life and lose sight of the bigger goal and that includes procrastination too. I know that if I don’t stay focused and diligent to my goals then anything and anyone can come along and interrupt my vision. Whether it’s that supervisor that thinks I’m not good enough or an ailment that prevent me from being my best, It’s up to me to pull through, never settle , believe in the promise and always aim for bigger, better and more. What did it take for you to achieve the level of success that you have? It takes persistence, diligence and faith to have any level of success – no matter how you define success. There are plenty of times that I’ve wanted to throw in the towel but keeping my eye on the prize and having faith in God’s promise has helped me to come as far as I have and will continue to take me further. What are your biggest accomplishments to date? My Biggest accomplishment, professionally, is being nominated for an Emmy Award for my hosting skill. It’s a nomination I earned for my talent, not for a program or inclusion of something other than my skill. It’s especially rewarding considering I’m a self taught TV Host and had no training before the nomination and gained it within 4 years of starting on-air. Blogger wise- being called on by Essence Magazine for a feature in their big Fall fashion September issue with my fashion insight and having the iconic publication refer to me as a tastemaker. What advice do you have for another young woman who’s chasing her dreams but not getting results? It’s so cliche but stick with it and don’t give up. Keep the faith and DO THE WORK. Faith with out works is null. Put in the hard work and dreams will become a reality. Also think outside the box and try the path least taken to standout and make your dreams real. What/Who inspires you when you feel like giving up? I’m a praying girl and call on God in my time of trial and triumph. The man above aside – my friends are really great supporters who encourage and crack the whip on me when I’m feeling down and out and won’t allow me to settle for anything less than great. Lastly, my mother and siblings. I’m the oldest of 3, raised by a single mother who instilled a great level of independence in me and and encouraged me to strive for bigger and better. Whenever I’m down I think of all those things, make those calls to pull through it.
