Mocha Girl on a Mission: Benita Arceneaux

Obstacles I’ve Overcome…

I can’t say that I have experienced any obstacles any more drastic than many other Black American Girls. Believe me, there are many that have much worse experiences. I was always taught that obstacles are just challenges or stepping stones that make us stronger.

I was the middle child having one older sister and one younger brother. My mother did the very best she could with what she had. But, as most single mothers experience, whether by choice or a matter of economics, my mother’s own life experiences took a toll on her and she was out of work for a few years, and we found ourselves homeless. During this time, I choose to live with friends (a nice lady and her husband) to finish out my high school years. Sure, I had a somewhat challenging childhood, but it was heavily influenced by my father who was only a phone call away, my teachers, and other relatives to help guide me, as they do in many small communities: It truly does take a village.

My Greatest Accomplishment…

Retiring from the USAF at the rank of Major, after 22 years with many honors, awards, and decorations. A M.Ed degree and a 2nd Masters Degree in Communications, starting my own production company, ThNita Productions, LLC, producing my own television show, The Benita Show, that showcases arts, entrepreneurs, and other great stories.

I’m a Mocha Girl on a Mission because…

Having been on a mission since 4th Grade, now 44 years old, I continue to keep my eye on what I’ve been most passionate about.

My dream of being in TV started in 4th Grade, when everyone told me how talented I was on the stage, acting in school plays. However, graduating from State Line High School, I did not know how to pursue a career in TV, so the military was my career choice, and the best decision I could have ever made. I did not have the best upbringing as I lived with friends my last two years of high school, but success and independence has always been my focus. I joined the military in 1986 as an enlisted member, 7 years later, and having completed my Associates degree, I applied for an AFROTC scholarship, and was awarded a 2 year scholarship to complete my BS degree full time, to earn a commission in the USAF. I was commissioned in 1995 as a USAF 2nd Lieutenant. After completing a total of 22 years military time, I retired in 2008 having earned the rank of Major.

Congratulations on your accomplishments Benita! You are truly an inspiration. Here at Mocha Girls Pit Stop, we celebrate you and wish you unlimited success!
