I’m thrilled to announce that after years of toying with the idea, making excuses, researching, and ideating, I’m launching the HER Space podcast, a podcast for black women and women of color.  The great thing about new endeavor, is I’m partnering with my good friend and now, co-host, Dr. Dominique Broussard.

But I’m Too Busy to Start a Podcast

You ever have an idea or dream of doing something but you’re not quite sure where to get started? That’s how I felt about this podcast idea that seemed to keep nudging my spirit. I’d have friends say things like, “Girl, you need to create a podcast for black women, I love your message!” or “You know I don’t like to read like that, just start a podcast so I can listen to your content instead.”

For me, the uncertainty definitely held me back but I was also discouraged because podcasting is a whole new world for me.

Sure I taught myself how to blog and build websites and I even teach other women to do the same, but how would I find time to podcast? I have a full-time job, I want to keep fresh content on my blog, I travel the country for motivational speaking gigs, and being a present wife to my awesome husband is a priority.

I literally didn’t know where to get started or how to begin this journey, so I ignored the nudge from the universe until I met Dom at a speaking engagement at the University of San Francisco (USF) in 2018.

And Then The HER Space Podcast Was Birthed

Dom is an accomplished college professor and psychologist and the day I spoke at USF’s Womxn of Color conference, Dom attended my session and we exchanged information afterward.

Our schedules were super busy so it took a few months for us to link up but when we did, something magical happened. I remember us sitting in Hazel’s, a black-owned restaurant with bomb ass food and a chill vibe, as we got to know one another and learn more about what we were hoping to achieve over the next year or so.

We took notes, laughed, and enjoyed the fusion of southern food Hazel’s offers.

We also did something I normally don’t do when I meet with someone for the first time.

We laid it all on the table.

We asked really difficult interview-style questions to gain a better understanding of our working styles, strengths and areas for opportunity and brainstormed ways we could potentially collaborate around our shared mission to make a positive impact on the lives of black women and women of color.

We were unapologetically honest about where we are in our lives and what’s possible for us. We were transparent about our goals and what we wanted to accomplish from an individual and partnership standpoint.

And on that Monday, July 9, 2018, we both took a crazy leap and committed to starting something we’d never done before.

We agreed to start the HER Space podcast.

We didn’t come up with the name on that day but we did schedule several future meetings so we could hash out the vision, learn the basics of starting a podcast, figure out what mics we needed, determine when we wanted to launch, and to be honest, it was scary as f*ck… but we pushed forward anyway.

A Podcast for Black Women, By Black Women

In a world where black women are often underrepresented and misunderstood, we need more safe spaces to just… be.

Every Friday, join Dr. Dominique Broussard, a college professor and psychologist, and me, Terri Lomax, a techie and motivational speaker, as we initiate authentic conversations on everything from fibroids to fake friends.

If you’re a black woman or woman of color looking for an extra dose of inspiration on the go, pull up a seat and join us on the H.E.R. (Healing, Empowerment, Resilience) Space podcast. We can’t wait to meet you, sis!

To learn more about our journey, listen to Season 1: Episode 1. It’s an inspiring episode that’ll give you an extra push wherever you are in your journey.
