HomePersonal & Professional DevelopmentBreak Up With Procrastination: 7 Steps to Help You Follow Through With Your Goals Terri Lomax October 25, 2013 3 Comments Procrastination is the worst! How many times have you thought of a brilliant idea, passionately pursued it for a few days or maybe even a week, just to let it fall by the wayside? Too many times, eh? Don’t worry, me too! From business ventures, to authoring a book, to starting a new workout plan; at one point, I considered myself to be, “THE Queen of Procrastination,” until now. My Journey In order for you to understand why I’m so passionate about personal development and achievement, you have to know a little bit more about my background. I grew up in a pretty dysfunctional family where I was verbally and physically abused by my mom, that is, when she wasn’t incarcerated. Ever since I was 8 years old, my mom was in and out of prison, leaving my dad to raise my siblings and I. Growing up, I struggled with low self-esteem and depression, which affected my relationships with others, my self-image and my self-worth. As you can imagine, my low self-image also affected my ability to follow through on some of my goals and dreams. Often times, I let procrastination win because I was fearful, I doubted myself or I didn’t think I deserved to succeed. A month before I went away to college my dad passed away and a year later my mom was sentenced to 4 years in prison for a DUI. In the midst of trying to care for my younger siblings and complete my degree, I became laser focused. I created to-do lists and goal setting plans that helped me to graduate in 4 years and with honors, despite the craziness that life threw at me. The supportive community members in my corner, my family and my goal setting techniques kept me on track when all hell was breaking loose around me. After I graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in Business, I decided to pursue my Master’s in Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution. In addition, I started a blog last year with the mission to motivate young women to become their best selves by providing them with self-esteem and personal development resources. I am a firm believer that whatever we put our mind to, we can achieve. No matter where you come from or what you’ve done, you are not defined by your past. The tools, insights and worksheets in my e-Book, have assisted me as I traveled along this journey to breaking up with procrastination. You can do “it” if you’re willing to work hard.
