Mocha Girl of the Week: Jarryn Mercer

Jarryn Mercer was nominated by her best friend Melissa

Jarryn is a Mocha Girl on a Mission…

because she received a Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies from Southern Connecticut State University. She is currently working on her second Masters degree in Public Administration and aspires to work in the nonprofit industry. Jarryn is eager to continue to be a positive influence on young women of color.

Growing up in a single parent home, Jarryn had to become independent very quickly. She didn’t have much support when it came to an elderly figure that she could relate to. This allowed her to work a little harder and research everything on her own.

Jarryn’s greatest accomplishment so far is being able to mentor young women of color. Two years ago, she decided to join iMentor because she was eager to make an influence on young women who lacked positive support in their lives. iMentor is a program which builds mentoring relationships that empower students from low-income communities to graduate from high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions. Being able to give back to this community has really given Jarryn a sense of pride and accomplishment.
