My family’s from the south and candied yams (or candied sweets/ candied sweet potatoes) is a popular holiday dish for us. My grandmother typically doesn’t use marshmallows but I topped my candied yams dish with mini marshmallows last year and I fell in love.

Enjoy this super easy candied yams recipe!

Easy Candied Yams Recipe Ingredients:

  • 5 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 16 oz. bag mini marshmallows (you’ll have plenty left over to snack on)
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 9 teaspoons vanilla flavoring
  • 6 tablespoons butter

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9 X 13 inch baking dish
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add sweet potatoes and boil until almost tender (you don’t want them to be too soft), about 45 minutes. Drain, cool and peel
  3. Cut each potato half lengthwise into fourths (like this)
  4. Cover the bottom of the baking dish with one layer of potatoes
  5. Pour 1 cup of white sugar evenly over the layer of sliced potatoes
  6. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon of cinnamon evenly over sugar and potatoes
  7. Pour 3 teaspoons of vanilla flavoring over 1st layer
  8. Cut 6 teaspoons of butter and place them around the perimeter of the first layer
  9. Repeat steps 4-8 and leave about 2 inches from the rim and the last layer
  10. Cover dish with foil and bake for 1 hour or until potatoes are “candied.”
  11. Remove dish and cover with mini marshmallows. Bake until marshmallows are golden.
  12. Serve hot and enjoy
