Quote of the Week:

“One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.”Tony Robbins

I remember it like it was yesterday. I sat in my church’s renovated basement with a few of my church friends catching up on our personal teenage dramas, as we waited for the church leaders to begin the mentoring program our parent’s forced us to attend. My pastor’s wife asked us something along the lines of “What keeps you from being focused?” I don’t remember the context of the question but I do remember my response.  I blurted out almost instantly, “I get easily distracted!”

As self-aware as it sounds, I didn’t realize this truth about myself until I uttered it to the group. But it was true. I had a habit of letting “bright and shiny objects” deter me from getting things done. As a teen, these shiny objects or distractions came in the form of boys, celebrity gossip, doing nothing at all or procrastinating on the internet all day.

It wasn’t until life got real, that I decided to start seizing opportunities. I began to grind out and work harder than I ever had, not because I felt like it, but because my life depended on it.

A month before I went away to college my dad passed away and a year later my mom was sentenced to 4 years in prison for a DUI. In the midst of trying to care for my four younger siblings and earn my degree, I became laser focused.

I created to-do lists and goal mapping plans that enabled me to graduate in 4 years with honors, despite the craziness that life threw my way. The supportive community members in my corner, my family and my goal setting techniques kept me on track when all hell was breaking loose in my life. – Excerpt from my eBook Break Up With Procrastination

What form do your bright and shiny objects come in? Is it keeping you from being laser focused? Take a look at the tips below and see if you can implement them into your life.

1. Know Your End Goal- Get serious about what you want to achieve and write out your goals to make them real. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” What is it you want to achieve?

2. Get Clear About Your Actions- Sometimes we get wrapped up in being busy that we confuse motion with action. Just because you’re moving doesn’t mean you’re moving in the right direction. When making moves, ask yourself, “How is what I’m doing right now, bringing me closer to my goal? Why am I doing this? Does it make sense?”

3. Self-Reflect Often- There’s something powerful about reviewing your goals on a consistent basis. One of the most game-changing actions for me is my weekly Self-Reflection Journal. Once a week I reflect on my goals, progress and action steps that’ll lead me to my goals and the results have been incredible. My productivity and my confidence has skyrocketed.
